“How refreshing to be shown a dance that, in 1982 as now, succeeds in being on the cusps between dance and
pedestrian movement, between rehearsal and performance, between tentative experiment and fluent work of art.”
– Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times
Originally commissioned in 1982 by David R. White and Dance Theater Workshop, Trying Times (remembered) has not been seen in its
entirety in over 25 years. Gordon's contemporary reconstruction features Pick Up Performance Company members including
Karen Graham, original cast member Valda Setterfield, and dance students from the CalArts Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance.
This rare remount features a new script based on David's 1982 production and Igor Stravinsky's Apollo.
- The remount of Trying Times (remembered) is supported by the Bessie Schönberg/First Light Commissioning and Creative Residency Program of Dance Theater Workshop with support from the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Jerome Robbins Foundation. Dance Theater Workshop’s presentation of Trying Times (remembered) is supported, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts’ American Masterpieces: Dance initiative, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts.
