Provocateur at Home, a Monarch Abroad
“As conventions go, nudity is an easy target. But Ms. Halprin’s real contribution revolves around a rigorous, often politically charged re-examination of choreographic elements like structure, improvisation, collaboration and technique. “Parades & Changes,” for example, is organized as a series of discrete, movable sections — “cellblocks” — with Mr. Subotnick sometimes inventing the dynamic upon which Ms. Halprin based the choreography.”
