Kate Mattingly on the Balkan Dance Platform
“The invitation to attend the Balkan Dance Platform from October 1 to 3, 2009 in Novi Sad, Serbia came from Dance Theater Workshop (DTW) in NYC, an organization that has an established reputation for supporting and promoting contemporary artists from around the world. In 2002, I worked with DTW on an Eastern European Criticism Initiative which recognized the essential role criticism plays in defining and amplifying the work of new choreographers. ”

It was wonderful to read about the Balkan Dance Platform in Serbia. This is a part of the world ,not considered part of the dance scene and yet when I was invited there to teach and choreograph with a group of contemporary dancers, I was so surprised at the level of dancers and incredibile support of the country to visiting artists. I attended a choreographic evening which was more inventive that what I have seen in a long while in N.Y.The part that was unbelievable was that studios for rehearsal and a theatre was offered free for my use for the performance project.!
