Studio Rental Policies
In order to maintain a safe, clean, and private creative space for everyone, renters should follow the guidelines below.
Studio Access
- All renters and persons under primary renter MUST check in at the 1st floor Reception desk. The Primary Renter must pick up a studio card-key in order to gain access to the 3rd floor studios. 3rd floor access is permitted no more than 10 minutes prior to the start of each rental for locker room use only. A driver’s license or other photo i.d. is required as a key deposit. Upon return of the key, the renter will receive their i.d. back. Studio keys must be returned after each rental, even if the studio has been booked several days in a row. Renters may be charged a fee for lost studio keys.
- Due to the close proximity of our upstairs neighbors, use of Dance Theater Workshop’s 3rd floor terrace is prohibited. Dance Theater Workshop is a No Smoking facility.
- Dance Theater Workshop’s studios and gallery may not be transformed or tampered with in any way. No nails, tacks, screws, tape or paint may be used on walls, ceilings or floors. If you must use tape as a marker, make sure it is Gaff Tape, and is removed at the end of each rental.
- Dance Theater Workshop reserves the right to require additional compensation from renters if damages to the studio and/or studio equipment occur as a result of conduct during the rental period.
- Please do not adjust temperature levels in the studio.
- The piano is available for rentals in the David R. White studio only. If piano use is desired, it must be requested at the time of booking, as it may affect studio availability.
- The hallway outside the studios may not a warm up or waiting area.
- Clothing or other personal belongings may not be left in the dressing room lockers overnight. We ask that renters do not linger in the studios when their scheduled time is up, as rentals are booked back-to-back.
Hours of Operation
- Dance Theater Workshop is open Monday-Saturday from10am-10pm and Sundays from 12-8pm; no renter shall be permitted
in the space either before or after these hours. For showings and classes, renters must factor in the amount of time it will take to
set up and clear the space once the class or showing is over and plan their start/end time accordingly.
Food Beverages and Shoes
- Street shoes, food and beverages (with the exception of bottled water) are strictly prohibited in the studios at all times.
Dance shoes (i.e. jazz shoes or ballet slippers) are permissible; any other type of shoe requires advance approval by Dance
Theater Workshop’s Studio Manager
Payments
- Payment is due prior to each rental. If multiple dates in a given month have been booked, all dates for that month must be
paid in full by the first rental date. NO EXCEPTIONS. Renters will not be able to gain access to the 3rd floor studios until their
rental time for that day has been paid. ARTISTS MUST SIGN A POLICY WAIVER AND LEAVE A VALID CREDIT CARD # UPON
BOOKING THE SPACE.
Penalty for Late/Non-Payment
- For unpaid invoices that are more than 30 days past due, there is a penalty fee of 15% of the open balance. In addition, any
artist with an overdue balance will not be permitted to rent Dance Theater Workshop’s studios until their bill has been paid in full.
Dance Theater Workshop reserves the right to charge your card in the event that overdue payments are not reconciled within a
30-day grace period. All billing disputes must be submitted to Dance Theater Workshop’s Studio Manager in a timely manner.

Reservations
- Rentals are booked on the hour only. We do not accept reservations for rentals that start or end on the half-hour.
- We have a quarterly booking cycle for rehearsals. The studio books open on the first business day of each quarter:
• In July, books open for September, October, and November. • In October, books open for December, January, and February. • In January, books open for March, April, and May. • In April, books open for June, July, and August.
- All other rentals can be booked up to six months in advance.
- RENTERS HOSTING ONGOING CLASSES MUST SECURE STUDIO RESERVATIONS EVERY THREE MONTHS. WE DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY ROLL CLASS RENTALS INTO THE NEXT BOOKING CYCLE.
- Our studio spaces tend to book up quickly. We encourage renters to reserve time as far in advance as possible. If you are unable to book space the first time you call, be sure to check back with us at a later date in the event that there is a cancellation.
- Check out Dance Theater Workshop’s Outer/Space Rehearsal Subsidy program and find out about great spaces in the outer boroughs that offer subsidized rates for dance rehearsals.
Classes/Auditions
- For auditions with 10 or more people, you must rent the second studio at the rehearsal rate for the duration of the audition.
- Dance Theater Workshop must approve all advertising material for classes and showings in advance.
- The number of guests/students/auditioning performers must be in accordance with our building code.
- In order to have enough space for dancers to move, we recommend limiting the number of participants to 30 people for classes and auditions.
- For large auditions, we REQUIRE renters to schedule auditions by appointment only, and organize their guests into time-slots within the rental time. Renters must also have two staff people on hand to help sign-in guests and escort them to the studio space.
