Outer/Space Rehearsal Subsidies for Studios
The Outer/Space program was developed in fall 2000 in response to a shortage of affordable rehearsal and performance spaces in Manhattan and the subsequent opening of many artist-run studios in the outer boroughs. Awards ranging from $2000- $6000 are distributed annually in a continued effort to assist artists who manage public studios in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.
Outer/Space Rehearsal Subsidies support facilities that provide viable and affordable rehearsal space to the greater dance community. This program is intended to subsidize creative rehearsal time and excludes auditions, classes, workshops, and showings. Additionally, Outer/Space awards are intended to assist outside artists and companies; rehearsal time used by the applicant company is not eligible for inclusion.
The Outer/Space program for studios provides two different types of funding - Rehearsal Subsidy and Creative Residency awards; eligible rehearsal facilities may apply for one or both streams of funding. Studios that apply for a rehearsal subsidy grant must be able to provide a minimum of 1,000 hours of rehearsal time during a one-year period to the greater dance community at the subsidized rate of $10/hour or less. Studios that apply for a creative residency grant must be able to provide 200 hours of free studio space to artists selected by Dance Theater Workshop to participate in the Outer/Space Creative Residency program.
The deadline to apply for 2009 funding is February 20, 2009.
