Outer/Space
The Outer/Space program was developed in fall 2000 in response to a shortage of affordable rehearsal and performance spaces in Manhattan, and the subsequent opening of many artist-run studios in the outer boroughs. The Outer/Space Program supports creative development in three ways:
- Rehearsal Subsidy for Studios – Awards ranging from $2000-$5000 are distributed annually in a continued effort to assist artists who manage public studios in the outer boroughs of New York City. Grant recipients are required to offer a minimum of 1,000 hours of rehearsal time to the greater dance community at the subsidized rate of $10/hour or less.
- Creative Residency Subsidy for Studios - Studios that receive a creative residency grant provide free studio space to artists selected by Dance Theater Workshop to participate in the Outer/Space Creative Residency program. A $2000 grant subsidizes 200 hours of studio time, which is distributed equally amongst the resident artists at each space.
- Creative Residency for Artists – This program is focused on creative development with an emphasis on process. Artists selected to participate in a creative residency receive 100 hours of free rehearsal space and are invited to attend a series of professional development workshops and critical dialogues. Throughout the residency, artists work with an advisor who provides constructive criticism as well as an outside perspective on new material that is generated during the residency.
Outer/Space is made possible with funding from JPMorgan Chase, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York City Council.
Outer/Space supports facilities that provide viable and affordable rehearsal space to the greater dance community. Eligible studios may apply for one or both streams of funding. This program is intended to subsidize creative rehearsal time and excludes auditions, classes, workshops, and showings. Additionally, Outer/Space awards are intended to assist outside artists and companies; rehearsal time used by the applicant company is not eligible for inclusion.
