Fiscal Sponsorship Program

Overview

Dance Theater Workshop members have the opportunity to solicit tax-deductible donations from individuals and apply for grants from institutions by becoming a Fiscally Sponsored Artist. These services allows members to raise money so they can produce work and pay performers and collaborators, and helps them cultivate skills for building a sustainable future in contemporary dance and performance.

THESE DONATIONS CAN BE CHANNELED THROUGH FISCAL SPONSORSHIP
  • Contributions from individuals (checks, money orders, and credit card donations)
  • Goods to which a dollar amount can be easily fixed and documented
  • Matching grants
  • Most corporate and foundation grants

THESE DONATIONS CANNOT BE CHANNELED THROUGH FISCAL SPONSORSHIP
  • Benefit ticket sales
  • Donated services
  • Donated space
  • Non-approved corporate, foundation or government grants
  • Ticket sales

FEES
There is a $25 enrollment fee to participate in the Fiscal Sponsorship program. Dance Theater Workshop deducts a 7% administrative and accounting fee from all member contributions made by check or money order, and a 9% fee from all member contributions made via credit card online.

Money is paid out to members as an artist fee. Individuals who are not incorporated and receive $600 or more in fees per calendar year will be sent an Internal Revenue Service "Information Return/ Form 1099" (Non-employee compensation) from Dance Theater Workshop, a copy of which is mailed directly to the IRS, as required by law.

Participation in this program is not the same as having your own non-profit, tax-exempt status. Copies of Dance Theater Workshop's 501(c)(3) forms or tax-exempt form are not available to fiscally sponsored artists. Exceptions are made when forms are requested by a granting organization.

FEDERAL ID NUMBERS
If your company has a Federal I.D. number, checks can be written to your company name, eliminating the need to use an individual's social security number. To apply for a Federal I.D. number, file IRS Form SS-4. Depending on which method you use, the process can take up to four weeks. You will need to have your number ready before you apply to the Fiscal Sponsorship program, if you intend to use a Federal ID Number.

REQUIRED STATEMENT
All written solicitations must include the statement below (word for word), and must have the prior approval of Dance Theater Workshop before going to print. The note at the end of the statement must be no smaller than ten point bold face type. Dance Theater Workshop will refuse to collect contributions if any of these requirements are not followed. Please email materials for approval to
richert@dtw.org, and allow a two-day turnaround time for a response.
